Story of Burmese Calendar...
One thing I am really sad for Myanmar people that most of them forget about their own calendar!!
Once people from our neighboring countries said that "our new year in April around 13th,14th and 15th" Myanmar people easily response to them like "0h! yes, same with us! our new year in April too"
I feel that we have lost our memories about being Burmese and being citizenship of Myanmar! You know what! these neighboring countries, mostly mainland of south east Asian countries, such as;Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and some other ethics are using Burmese Calendar which is based on Lunar Calendar system and solar system!
According to history, burmese calendar, called Burmese Era, born after two Eras which were Maha Era and Buddhist Era.
Buddhist Ear started after Buddha's Parinibbana (Buddha Dead) which was created by India astrologists and based on Surya Siddhanta calendar system that was wildly used in India at that time! Buddhist Calendar system plays important role for monks to mark and celebrate for Activities according to Buddha! Which calendar was brought to Burma with Buddhism!
Time bye Time, One of the Burmese King, known as Phy Era, rearranged the calendar with the help India astrologists to make it useful for people to use as well!
Then Maha Era, that was lunched in Northern India, some say Nepal, and it spread to the rest of all Buddhism nations.
Maha Era was used until Bagan Era, recorded as First Nation of Burma. King Popa Sawrahan recalibrated the calendar, named the new era Kawza Thekkarit with a Year Zero starting, which is also known as Burmese Calendar!
The calendar has been used continuously in various Burmese states since its launch in 640CE. It was also used as the official calendar in other mainland Southeast Asian kingdoms of Arakan, Lan Na, Xishuangbanna, Lan Xang, Siam, and Cambodia down to the late 19th century. Today, the calendar is used only in Myanmar as the traditional civil calendar, alongside the Buddhist calendar. It is still used to mark traditional holidays such as the Burmese New Year, and other traditional festivals, many of which are Burmese Buddhist in nature.
